Bern, the capital of Switzerland is a beautiful city. I knew Bern is a museum city and will not fail any museum fanatic (**cough** Kshitij **cough**). So, it was not difficult to lure him to this day trip!
Bern is about 1 hour ride from Lausanne. We decided to go there for a weekend day. Croissant, coffee, book and we were ready to board the train. The journey itself was beautiful. Full of lush greenery and view from Lake Leman. Refreshing start is always great!
Things you might find interesting in Bern are:
1. Interesting tram station:
Just outside the main train station, you will find this interesting tram station. Creative architecture, I would say!
2. Beautiful Old town:
Walking along the tram station, you will soon find yourself in one of the prettiest old town. Beautiful houses lined up and interesting 16th century fountains telling their stories. Sounds poetic, no? No doubt it made it in the UNESCO heritage list!
Have you seen Bern: The city of fountains and bridges, yet?
3. Zytglogge clock tower:
Another of the medieval wonders. The Astronomical clock was built in 15th century (The tower itself was built in 13th century though!). It has been an important landmark of the city since then and has served as clock tower, prison, guard tower and civic memorial to the city. Talking about back in time, eh?
4. Einstein House:
So, put on your geek hats because next sight is Albert Einstein house! Did you know that world renowned scientist Albert Einstein lived in Bern from 1903 to 1905 in this very apartment with his wife Mileva and son Hans Albert. It has been converted to a museum now. It is about 200m from the clock tower.
5. Bear Garden:
Bear are the national symbol of Bern. Taking it a bit more seriously, you can actually see them in Bern old town. No, Not in a zoo but in a park created just for them. Bear garden it is.
All the varieties of bridges! From old-school romantic stone bridges to high-speed train bridges!
Fancy old towns? You should read Strolling in and around Salzburg.
Also see, 16 of the most spectacular views
Fancy museums? No worry! From Rifle museum to Alpine museum to Natural history museum. Bern has got them all.
9. Other interesting stuff:
I love walking on streets to get a better notion about the city. and one of the best things about Bern is you can walk to most of interesting sights!
Bern takes you back in time. The old town, fountains and bridges make whole history unfold before your eyes in the most visual way. There is something in the unspoiled charm of the city that is unforgettable. Bern was a nice and refreshing break. It is the beauty dose you need once in a while! Though I was there only for a day, I could imagine people greeting and meeting each other in the old town sipping wine (or Beer!) and talking about the beautiful city they live in! 🙂
This capital city definitely deserves a visit. SO would you visit it? or have you already visited it? Did you like it? I am all ears!
